Unofficial Meeting Minutes… 18 July 2004

President, Karen Loop called the meeting to order at 1:30 p.m. at the TCWS field pavilion.  (13) Members and (0) associate members were present. Due to the low attendance as a result of the weather, no 50/50 raffle was held.

Jack Hilbert read the Secretary’s report for June with a motion to accept by James Pauley, seconded by Terry Miller, and all approved.  Dale Loop read the Treasurer’s report as of 18 July 2004.  A motion to accept was made by Terry Miller, seconded by Ray Lucas and all approved.

Old Business…

1.      2005 Swap Meet Update

a.      Dale Loop has not yet been able to reserve the Hamburg Field House for 26 March 2005 but has made a verbal reservation for that day.

2.      2005 Giant Scale Fly In

a.      Larry Smith was requested to be sure to notify Nelson Gould of the change dates for next year’s event and to be sure all other necessary notifications are submitted in time.

b.      Rick Boyer offered his comments and ideas as to why our Giant Scale Event has suffered a decline in attendance over the past few years;

                                                   i.      The hobby has moved towards larger and more expensive aircraft

ii.      The field facilities relative to runway length and trees on the west end are not conducive to attracting today’s giant scale pilots.

iii.      Lack of camping facilities is a major draw-back.

iv.      It was agreed the BOD would address these comments at the next meeting.

3.      Family Picnic

a.      Dale Loop is organizing the Picnic and the Fun Fly contests.

b.      All those attending are asked to bring a covered dish to share.

c.      Any volunteers wishing to help should contact Dale Loop.

4.      Club  Fund Raising

a.      John Messersmith volunteered to be the facilitator for an Open Fun Fly to be held on 9 October 2004.

b.      Neighboring clubs to be invited.

c.      Announcements will be posted in local hobby shops, stores, etc.

5.      Club  Sign

a.      Jack Hilbert contacted the PA DOT and was advised private organizations are not permitted to use State installations for private signage.

b.      A request can be made to the State to install “Approved” signs however the time and bureaucracy seems prohibitive.

c.      There are support stands which currently exist at the locations we discussed and the club could attempt to hang their own signs.

d.      If the club wants to pursue, a volunteer to have the signs made and hung is needed.

There was no other old business at the time.

 New Business…

.

1.      Storage of Planes in Kitchen

a.      A discussion was held relative to the use of the kitchen to store planes.

b.      A membership vote was “demanded” by Karen Loop.

c.      Majority of attending members were in favor – HOWEVER – It is recommended the BOD review this vote before making it official.

2.      Resignation of Karen Loop

a.      Effective as of the close of the meeting, Karen Loop resigned as TCWS club president.

b.      John Messersmith, as the sitting Vice President will assume the role of club president.

c.      A replacement candidate for the VP position will be addressed by the BOD.

History Lesson – The Story of WD-40

Editors Note: - The following article appeared in the July / August 2004 issue of the COCALICO PROPBUSTERS NEWS and was submitted to TCWS for sharing by Bud Wunder. The original source of the information was The Tail Spinner, Longmont Aircraft Modelers Association, Mike Guliza, editor, Longmont, CO.

The product now known as WD-40 began as a search for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts.  It was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company.  Its name comes from the project that was to find a “water displacement” compound.  They were successful with the 40th formulation, thus WD-40.

The Corsair Company bought it in bulk to protect their Atlas missile parts.  The workers were so pleased with this product, they began smuggling it to use at home.  The executives decided there might be a consumer market for it and put it in aerosol cans.  The rest they say... is history.

It is a carefully guarded recipe known only to (4) people, one of whom is the “brew master”.  There are about 2.5 million gallons manufactured annually.  It gets its distinctive smell from a fragrance which is added to the brew.

WD-40 has been designated the “Official Multi-Purpose Problem Solver of NASCAR”

Editor Note ;--Our thanks to Bud Wunder for contributing this information - if anyone else has information or articles they would like to share with the other members, please let me know.

From the TCWS Snack  Bar…

Unfortunately, due to the poor weather and low attendance at the July meeting, only (6) members stayed for the Land and Sea Kabob cook-out – BUT - they were the (6) happiest members we had that day!

The following weekend, several of the members and their wives participated in a STEAK-FEST where steaks were grilled and included baked potatoes and corn-on-the -cob.  This was a great opportunity for the members to socialize and get to know each other in different ways.

We still have dinners planned for August, September and October. Please feel free to suggest what you would like to see as a main course. A suggestion has been made for a CLAM BAKE.  This idea will be discussed at the August meeting.

Naturally, the success we have had is only possible due to the continued support and help from members who help prepare and serve the food.

october fun-fly -

The idea was confirmed at the July meeting concerning a Fun –Fly in October as another club fund raising event.  While it was agreed that it is too late to get a strong AMA/IMAA support, we could have an event and simply invite he local R/C clubs to attend.  John Messersmith and Jack Hilbert have volunteered to organize such an event. .An organizing team will be assembled and more details presented at the August meeting.  As this will most likely be the last outdoor club event of the year, everyone is asked to attend and participate.  As always, a full menu will be available form the kitchen and families are always welcome.
