Meeting:
Thursday, April 17th, 2003 @ 7:30 PM
Hamburg
Moose Lodge
Unofficial
Meeting Minutes:
President Walt Gladney called the
meeting to order at 7:33 p.m. at the Moose Lodge in Hamburg, PA.
Fifteen (15) members and one (1) associate member were present.
Jeff Shriver read the Secretary’s report for February with a motion
to accept by Bud Wunder, seconded by Larry Smith, and approved.
Jeff Shriver read the Treasurer’s report as presented by Dale Loop
for January with a motion to accept by Sam Miller, seconded by Jack Hilbert,
and approved. Larry Smith won the
50/50 raffle drawing of $11.
Old
Business…
1.
Swap Meet Review – No problems were reported on the setup
for the event. As far as manpower
was concerned, three (3) doors will be open and there are plenty of volunteers
for the jobs. Supplies are set
and in order for the kitchen. With
regard to parking concerns, illegal parking along the sides of the building is
a fire safety issue and announcements will be made to keep these areas clear.
Additional members will be on hand at the TCWS club table.
Approximately 90% of the tables have been sold as of the March meeting
(the highest rate to date before the event), which leaves about 20 tables left
to sell. Twelve (12) Reading
baseball tickets have been donated for a raffle.
Donations for other raffles include door prizes from Iron Horse
Hobbies, a 1/3-scale Christian Eagle by Rick Boyer, a Diamond Duster by Dave
Renninger, and a Corsair.
2.
Lime Application – Sam Miller has had it delivered to the
field. A motion was made by John
McLaughlin, seconded by Bud Wunder, and approved to have the Treasurer cut a
check to cover the cost of the expenses.
The Building & Grounds Committee will handle the application
process.
3.
Work Party (?) – Not much is needed for field preparation
at this time. The rolling will
take place in about 2 weeks. Sam
Miller has the rolling covered. The
upper part of the drive will be raked. It
may need some stone added. A
motion was made by Nelson Gould, seconded by Larry Smith, and approved to have
stone applied up to a cost of $250.
4.
Berks County TV (BCTV) Program Update – Channel 13 in
Reading; things are going well for the event.
Bud Wunder is to meet with members later. It is tentatively scheduled to air June 9 or 10 (Monday or
Tuesday) before the Fun-Fly. It
will be a 1-hour show and will include a map to get to the field.
The exact details on the showing will follow in the newsletter and/or
meeting by the May meeting date.
5.
Kutztown Vintage Days – It is scheduled for May 24 &
25, 2003. At the April meeting, a
commitment from members to bring models will be determined.
Our setup will be in a grassy area; we can bring our own tables or
place them on the ground for show. Details
are to be organized at the April meeting.
There
was no other old business at the time.
New
Business…
1.
Stone @ Parking Area (?) – Some club members have
approached Sue Christman on this issue already.
This idea has to be tabled until the grass comes in during spring.
2.
Flower Bed & Sign Area – The snowplow blade reportedly
hit this area. It is scheduled
for repair at the earliest convenience.
3.
New Freezer – Dave Renninger has delivered a new Frigidaire
freezer purchased at Lowe’s thru a discount from Terry Miller.
The cost was $235. The old freezer has been disposed of properly already.
George Case has painted the area around the new freezer.
There was no other new business at
the time.

Announcements…
1.
The TCWS and it participants of the 2003 Swap Meet suffered a loss on
Saturday, March 22 when a fire that started in a deep-fryer destroyed the
kitchen of the Hamburg Field house, according to fire officials.
The grease fire broke out at about 10:30 a.m. while some members of the
club were cooking. The kitchen
sustained major fire, smoke and heat damage, while the rest of the building
sustained minor smoke damage, officials said.
While there were no serious injuries, a vendor at the show, whose name
was unavailable, suffered minor burns to his hands while trying to put out the
flames with a fire extinguisher.
2.
George Case has reported that the fire extinguisher under the
pavilion has been discharged, but is not sure where.
There is no need to replace it since one is located in the kitchen.
An extra can be borrowed for the annual Fun-Fly.
3.
General Interest Participation (i.e. Swap Meet) – Many TCWS members do
not read the newsletter and as a result aren’t aware of events and details of
such. Money is made on the events
in order to help keep dues down – the more volunteers, the better the success
of the particular event. There will
be future discussions covering options and ideas for generating more member
interest and participation.
Helpful
Hints…
Control Horn Installation
When installing control horns onto
control surfaces the screwdriver invariably slips. The result is a hole poked
into the covering material or a gouge in the balsa. There is a simple tool you
can make that will eliminate this damage. Take a small piece of thin plywood and
cut a rectangular opening in it just slightly larger than the base of the
control horn. Place this opening around the control horn base before tightening
the mounting screws. Now when the screwdriver slips there will be no damage to
your new aircraft.
Temperature-Sensitive Items
In warm summer months, keep in mind
several RC items that deserve a temperature-controlled environment. Batteries
left in airplanes that are hung in the garage can get too hot. Fuel can
evaporate quicker. Monokote and other film coverings can separate from their
backing. CA glues can age quicker. Try to keep these things cool so they’ll be
ready to use in good condition when you need them.
